- use a large serrated knife to cut the bread into four 2 5cm thick slices combine the egg and milk in a large bowl
- to make the caramel sauce combine cream butter and sugar in a saucepan stir over low heat until butter melts increase heat to medium and bring to the boil gently boil stirring constantly for 5 minutes or until sauce thickens
- meanwhile melt half the butter in a frying pan over medium high heat until foaming dip 2 bread slices 1 at a time in the egg mixture add to pan and cook for 1 2 minutes each side or until golden brown transfer to plates repeat with remaining butter bread and egg mixture
